The Performer
For J. Avery Chester, performance starts with the person underneath the role. Comedy, drama, history, faith, and music may require different tools, but the work begins in the same place: finding what is emotionally true about the character.
That approach has carried him through character work ranging from Ralph David Abernathy and Rev. Dennis Fuller to the Cowardly Lion, Clyde, and multiple roles within a single production.
Beyond Performance
Theatre is also part of J. A. Chester's work as a writer. Original stage projects extend the same storytelling instincts found in his books and other creative work into a live medium—where character, dialogue, music, movement, and audience all occupy the same room.
